March is Jewish Women’s History Month and the JCC is delighted to presentRabba Sara Hurwitz, who made history last year when the title Rabba was conferred upon her by Rabbi Avi Weiss of the modern Orthodox Hebrew Institute of Riverdale (HIR). Rabba Hurwitz, who previously studied in Drisha Institute’s Scholar Circle Program for three years, is now a full member of the rabbinic staff at HIR and Dean of Yeshivat Maharat, whose mission is “confirming Orthodox women as halakhic and spiritual leaders.” Joining Sara in conversation will be fellow Barnard alumna Rabbi Dr. Judith Hauptman, an original member of Ezrat Nashim, a group of women who lobbied in the 1970’s for egalitarianism in Jewish life. In 1982 Dr.Hauptman became the first woman PhD in Talmud, which she received from the Jewish Theological Seminary where she is the E. Billi Ivry Professor of Talmud and Rabbinic Culture. In May 2003 she was ordained as a rabbi by the Academy for Jewish Religion.
